1. Life at the Moment!

My most favorite thing in the world.

In my wallet I keep few things like everyone else, a metro card, drivers licence and a debit card. One thing in particular is Debbie Millman’s business card.

She gave it to me when I met her at the Hillman Curtis Film Series. Debbie is one of my favorite people in the NYC design community. She makes branding fascinating. I can’t not have her card with me at all times. It helps me to know her words of wisdom.

After a rough but needed week. I was taken aback at the kindess I was given. It was not expected, but welcomed. Truthfully I needed to leave broadway advertising.

I must explain that Broadway Advertising has been a valuable asset to me, my first internship and real New York job experience came of this industry. In Broadway it’s not just a poster, it spans to all kinds of advertising at all sizes, the web, mail, merchandise and environments that must all communicate the spirit of a show. Key art must communicate at all points depending on media to have brand recognition to specific shows. With this experience I want to get into branding and identity. Ideally a small studio atmosphere that does a mix of work. In other words I crave variety.

Going to Creative Mornings made my day the speaker was Stephen Doyle, and after that I feel re-energized his personal and commercial work is something to look up to! To let you know Creative Mornings is on Kickstarter. Even if you contribute 10 dollars you still get cool shit.

Coming up I am going to some great events/concerts. I am going to Digital Dumbo on the 26th. So glad I get to go to this the Brand New Conference which I am a full time volunteer for. Then in October be still my 90s heart! I will see Alanis Morissette at Terminal 5 and I totally know the presale code.

  2. This was an unexpected fun week. I had time to go to design events. New York is so great at affordable design events to attend and a wealth of them. So I went to Jonathan Harris’s Creative Morning, then to Armin Vit’s Lecture that covered his early work and commencing in the Brand New Conference which is Super Cheap for students to attend at 150.00. It was so great to see someone who worked relentlessly on improving and where he is today is amazing. Armin made me feel so much better as a student graduating from college.

Today I helped my gracious friends who I’m staying with on their construction which involved a great looking throne and paint work. I LOVE doing this work. Since these projects, I’ve gotten interested in wood working.

Can’t wait to have hobbies again such as; Wood working, book binding and figure drawing while teaching myself web design.

  5. Reflections of Summer

I am back in Kansas. It feels like a different world. After being in New York for three months I was used to the conviences of Brooklyn, living off Morgan Avenue, getting a sandwich at Brooklyn Natural or eating sushi at Momo’s. The weeks flew by and I met so many great people. Some of the best were my roommates living with some of the most creative individuals one of which was Sirin (sirinthada.com) A lovely illustrator, Sandy and Mac a great artistic married couple who make great theater, It was so great to watch Torchwood, Trueblood, and Game of Thrones. I could talk to them for hours. Finally two others Brian and Angela, one a paralegal, the other a costume design graduate student. I miss abusing Stacey the passive aggressive cat who absolutely hated to be picked up by the end of the summer I think she started to like it.

You must wonder, did I ever get out of the amazing giant apartment? Yes thanks to a friend who randomly started following me on Tumblr, Jessica, who just happened to be my neighbor. We went to broadway shows, the pride parade, and MOMA PS1, I had some unforgettable experienced with her. Then I connected with FHSU alumni  Jessica and Bangwool both amazing people with great insights on careers and living in NYC. Going out with Jessica was amazing we went to the South Street Seaport Pier 17 for the Four Sirens Fest, all I say is that it got wild.

You all must be wanting to know how my internship went. Well it was quite amazing, three months flew by so fast, being the most intense rewarding experiences of my life so far. I met amazing designers that I wish I could work with or for, and great thinkers. Spotco is one of the best agencies I have experienced. Some of my favorite people there aside from the whole design team, there is the interactive team, especially Lauren and Jacqueline some of the raddest girls I have met, not only the best of Web and Flash they are fun. Lauren’s birthday was pretty amazing on the Highline and other countless experiences. Someone I do owe a lot to is Michelle, she interned with me the week I started, she was there when I didn’t understand something and relate to.

The design events blew my mind I got to meet fantastic designers Michael Friemuth of Sagmiester Inc. and Joe Marianek of Pentagram, I even had a tour and portfolio review at Pentagram, I was ecstatic  I never thought I would be there at that moment, I got to see the offices that I had only seen on Hillman Curtis videos. I also went to Feed NYC and met August Heffner of MOMA, then had some of the best vegan pitas and Brooklyn Brewery beer. Then I met Jessica Hische it was the last day of my internship and I had to fly out Sunday, I was nervous going to Jessica and Russ’s going away party. That night was life changing, I met some of the most influential designers in design, web, fashion, and the Studio Mates and Jennifer Daniel of Bloomberg Business Week. I literally met people I only see statuses from Twitter, I could put icons to people finally.

This internship cemented what I already knew, New York is the place to be and I hope to return to Bushwick next August or maybe next summer. My options are open and can’t wait to come back, till then I have Torchwood, Misfits and Doctor Who. Like one of my classmates I will long for New York and this will feel like the longest year ever. Heres toward 2012 Graduation.

  6. Wish I could have seen this exhibit in person, but must admire in photos.
